Act One, Scene 1A
TESS
Think about it? I did.
I made these lists. I wrote down all the reasons "why" in Column A and all the reasons "why not" in Column B. Before long I realized that Column B was going to end up much longer and so I began to write very tiny in Column B so that Column A could catch up. It worked. The columns were the same length. But secretly I knew that there were more reasons in Column B. "Does one want to base one's entire future on quantity?," I asked myself. And so I decided to investigate the weightiness of each reason. Can one really compare "It's always nice to try something new!" with "Might cause death"? Surely there are other ways to make a choice. I had my tarot cards read.
I chose a number from one to ten.
I talked to my priest, rabbi or minister.
I read my horoscope.
I divided the sky into four quadrants and watched the flight of birds.
I practiced liver divination and hydromancy.
I rolled the dice.
I recited
    "Bubblegum, bubblegum, in a dish,
How many piece do you wish?"
I tried to find out what my true gut feeling was.
I slept on it.
I tried to come to a decision.

Catch the tiger by the toe...
My sister, unable to have a child of her own...
Has asked me to have one for her.
Tiger, tiger, burning bright,
In the forests of the night...
Have a baby for her, be pregnant for her. Give birth for her.
Catch the tiger by the toe.
If he hollers let him go...
How much are you willing to do for someone you love?
Yes. No. Maybe so.
